Total productive maintenance: improving equipment effectiveness through autonomous maintenance to increase productivity & product quality and reduce operating costs

Sixteen years ago, in 1984, Japanese Management Guru SEIICHI NAKAJIMA published his manufacturing philosophy "Zero Break-downs, Zero Defects & Zero Accidents". This equipment-oriented philosophy is the 'Mantra' of Total Productive-Maintenance (TPM). Approaching Zero is difficu but believing that Zero can be achieved is vital for the success of TPM. During past five to seven years, a number of Companies in our country have adopted TPM as a manufacturing strategy to improve equipment effectiveness. Leading Companies such, as Vikram Cements, Sundaram Fasteners, Hindustan Lever, Crompton Greaves, Larsen & Toubro & Electrosteel Castings have reported huge improvements in productivity and product quality with reduced capital investments and operating expenses. In fact, all Companies who have started implementation of TPM are happy with their progress. Many of our Foundries are typing to fight recession and severe competition in exports. To survive, these units should adopt TPM as a manufacturing strategy - as a drive towards achieving "Excellence in Productivity & Product Quality with Reduced Operating Costs".
