One of the most economical methods for obtaining near-net-shape parts for any type of metal or alloy is by metal casting process. One of the main advantages of the metal casting process is that it is adaptable to all types of production: automatic, manual, single-piece or mass production etc. Multi-cavity moulds are preferred when the dimensional tolerance of the part is not that very critical. One of the main criteria in multi-cavity moulds is that the melt conditions introduced to each of the cavities should be the same. There are different types of layouts used for multi-cavity moulds like tree or fishbone runner layout which uses less material but results in the most imbalanced filling of cavities in multi-cavity moulds. Usually, the experienced foundry engineers select the size, location, number and runner pattern for multi-cavity moulds.
