A field experimcnl was conducted on light textured soil at Kanpui during Kharif 1987 and 1988 to study the effect of desurtacing (7.5, 15.0, 22.5 cm and control) and 3 fertility levels (0+0.50+25 and 100+50 kg N+P_2O_5 ha~(-1)) on splash erosion, canopy development, water use, water use efficiency, root development, yield attributes and yield of maize(Zea mays) var. 'T-41' under minted conditions. Crop canopy, yeild attributes and grain as well as fodder yield were significantly decreased due to progressive dcsur facing of top soil and increased by increasing dose of fertilizers. The water use. water use efficiency and root development also declined with increasing soil truncation and inprovcs due to fertility improvement. However, the splash erosion was more due to desurfacing and reduced due to fertility improvement. Application oi higher level of fortilizei without truncation of top soil resulted in minimum splash erosion.
