Governments and AVA representatives have jointly developed nationally consistent arrangements and remuneration for engaging private veterinarians in an emergency animal disease response."Now we have a national approach to the engagement of private vets for this purpose," said Australian Chief Veterinary Officer Mark Schipp.So, how will it work."Under the policy, private vets can be directly engaged by state or territory governments as a temporary or casual government employee, or as a contractor. However, as a general rule, vets who are employed within local or state disease control centres will normally be engaged as employees. Contractor arrangements will most likely apply to vets working semi-independently in field-based roles such as disease surveillance or vaccination," Dr Schipp said.
