CONTRACEPTIVE EFFICACY OF CAPPARIS DECIDUA FLOWER EXTRACT IN MALE ALBINO RATS

Oral administration of Capparis decidua (Frosk.) Edgew flower ethanol crude extract (cdfece) @ 500mg/kg body weight/day for a period of spermatogenic cycle had shown adverse effect on reproductive, organs of male albino rats. Fertility test was performed after 60 days of treatment. The treated animals had shown 55.65 % reduction in sperm motility in cauda epididymides and 74.01%, 64.23% reduction in sperm density in testis and cauda epididymides respectively. The RBC and WBC count; haemoglobin, haematocrit and blood sugar were found to be within the normal range in the whole blood. Histometrical parameters of treated animals had illustrated decreased seminiferous tubule diameter and leydig cell nuclear diameter i.e. 37.41%, 62.95% respectively. Whereas epithelial cell height of caput, cauda epididymides and seminal vesicle has also shown significant diminution. The percentage of reduction was observed as 74.04%, 83.55% and 71.61% respectively. Sertoli cells were abnormal and interstitial cells as well as different cellular stages of testis also showed significant reduction in the treated group when compared with control group. Results denoted that the extract was interrupting the cycling of spermatogenesis either by suppressing the leydig cell function or by disturbing the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis.
