Community Milking Centre: A Success story of Karnataka Milk Federation

Dndia has a unique pattern of production, processing, marketing and consumption of milk. Approximately 70 million rural households (primarily small, marginal farmers and landless labours) in this country are engaged in milk production. Over 11 millionare organized into about 0.1 million village dairy co-operative societies (DCS) (i.e. about 110 farmers per DCS). The cumulative milk handled by DCS across the country is about 18 million kg per day ("stress on quality", NDDB 2011). This can be attributed to successful implementation of the Operation Flood programme and other dairy development programmes implemented by the State and Central Governments. India is currently the world leader in milk production with 132.4 mt in 2012-13, and a per capita milk availability of 290g/person. To meet global standards and rise in national per capita income, the future of milk production has to be framed on quality alone. This requires regulation to ensure that milk is produced, processed, manufactured, stored and sold by observing the best standards of sanitation, hygiene, quality and food safety.
