"ESTs are considered as an efficient route to reveal the information content and mimic the gene expression profile of the livestock genome. These are short (about 200-500 nucleotides long) single pass sequence reads derived from cDNA clones. Generation and indexing of species/tissue specific ESTs is being carried out worldwide as an important source for functional genomic studies and an invaluable tool for the annotation of genomic sequences of the mammalian genome. Using the available database and through comparative mapping it is now possible to predict the map location, assignment of ESTs to the complex livestock genome and to fish out the candidate genes affecting production/disease resistance traits."
