Milk & Milk Products: An Intricate Dilemma in Relation to Cardio Vascular Diseases

Coronaty heart disease (CHD), the most common and serious form of cardiovascular diseasesCVDs), is the leading cause of death in developed industrialized countries today. CVDs are today's World's Number 1 Killer. Every minute, someone in the United States dies of a heart attack. Although listed as the 14th leading cause of death in the USA,atherosclerosis viz. also called hardening of the arteries is responsible for most of deaths attributed to heart attacks. Fast changing lifestyle and poor dietary habits among other factors, would make CVDs the leading cause of deaths in affluent and technologically developed societies of our country also. Currently, CVDs account for around 15 per cent deaths in India. However, this figure is likely to climb to as high as 40 per cent by 2015 (AIIMS, 2002). Through proper nutrition, dietary strategies, prudent supplementation, adequate exercise, and avoidance of risk-related factors (tobacco products, Obesity, etc.), individuals can reduce the risk of CVDs to the levels of youthful men and women. Considering the high occurrence of CVD mortality and morbidity, as well as its economic toil, prevention or early management of risk factor for CHD is a major public health goal. In fact, it is possible to some extent to arrest the risk factors before they commit their capital crimes by proper understanding of dietary intervesntion and lifestyle.
