This article presents the utilization of slow ammonia release and protected protein (SARPP) supplement to economize milk production in dairy animals in India. The current status of protein meals in India is discussed. The methods for improving the nutritive value of protein meals and optimizing the plane of nutrition in dairy animals are given focus: bypass protein feed supplement and SARPP supplement. The uses of blood urea nitrogen as an indicator of efficient utilization of urea and of allantoin as an index of microbial protein supply are discussed. The effects of feeding SARPP supplement to animals on their milk production and quality are presented as well as the advantages of SARPP feeding. The operational health and safety aspects are also considered.
