Economic reforms have done wonders for various sectors in terms of productivity, income generation and consumer. But agriculture sector - though not by design - is suffering from tactical, strategic and policy incapacities globally. The projected global agricultural growth of 1.7% in the present decade is 0.9% less than the previous decade and may dampen the target of achieving global food security by 2020. The agricultural outlook released by OECD-FAO (2011-20) indicates that unless agriculture productivity and stocks are improved, achieving market balance for food commodities may take a longer time. It is time to look at agriculture and allied sectors in the context of new priorities like controlling food inflation, managing food security, improving productivity, reducing wastage, increasing farmer's income and extend support to accrue similar benefits harvested by economic reforms in other industrial sectors. Dairying has the potential to address many social issues inclusively and support proactive growth in rural society. Sustainable technologies and sustainability of rural sectors are important to reap our geographic and demographic dividends.
