Copper(II) chloride catalyzed Friedel-Crafts- typc conjugate addition of indoles to α,β- unsaturatcd enones: Synthesis of 3- substituted indoles

Several 3-substituted indoles have been synthesized in good to excellent yields by conjugate addition of indoles to α,β-unsaturated enones such as chalcones, methyl vinyl ketone and cyclohexenone in the presence of catalytic amount of copper(II) chloride. The substitution of indoles occurred exclusively at the 3-position, and products of N-alkylation have not been observed.
