摘要

I see a lot of bears. That's no coincidence: I live next to Yosemite National Park, where I lead natural-history tours, so I am lucky enough to enjoy great bear-watching opportunities. My favourite time of year is late spring -May into June - when mothers bring their cubs out into the vibrant green meadows to graze on succulent fresh grasses. Fresh from the den, the cubs are wobbly bundles of fur weighing little over 4kg. Their mothers park them at the bases of tall trees near the meadow's edge and keep a wary eye out for big males. Fortunately, the cubs know to scamper up the nearest tree at the first sign of danger, and stay there until the coast is clear. But when all is peaceful, their mothers take a break from feeding to join them as they rollaround and play rambunctiously. This is the best environment in which to see bears: you can spot them from a distance, then watch for hours as they graze, placidly as contented cows.
