Lack of high yielding varieties and unbalanced fertilisation are generally implicated in the lower productivity of garlic (Allium sativum L.) crop in India. A field experiment was conducted on garlic-maize cropping system at the Punjab Agricultural University Soil Science Research Farm, Ludhiana. Three farmyard manure (FYM) rates (0, 25 and 50 t ha~(-1)), three nitrogen (N) rates (90,120, and 150 kg N ha~(-1)), three P rates (45, 60 and 75 kg P2O5 ha~(-1)) and three K rates (20, 30, and 40 kg K2O ha~(-1)) were randomized in a Latin Square design. After the imposition of FYM and other treatments, garlic (var. PG-17) was raised and yield and kindred variables were recorded at appropriate stages. Results indicate that the economic yield was primarily determined by bulb size and weight. The N, K, and P fertilisers impacted yields significantly in that order. Bolting exhibited negative bearing on yield; it was effectively controlled by higher FYM rates. The P fertiliser effects ceased beyond 45 kg ha1 level and the K effects were not appreciable beyond 20 kg ha~(-1) level. The results of the study can have major implications in influencing the breeding and nutrient management programmes.
