Rutherford Aris entered chemical engineering academia in 1955 when he arrived at the University of Minnesota as a research fellow at the invitation of Neal Amundson,who was then leading the chemical engineering department at the University through a meteoric rise to the top.It was an exciting period with the University of Wisconsin spearheading the "transport revolution" and the University of Minnesota establishing the theoretical foundations of chemical engineering.Aris' entry into the profession could not have been timed more perfectly,for he was to be among the chief architects of the metamorphosis which chemical engineering was then undergoing.A paradigm change had been afoot following which fundamental,quantitative thinking was to become a part of chemical engineering methodology.
