COLOCASIA (Colocasia esculenta) is an important crop grown in jhum field under rainfed condition in northeastern region. It is an important source of food during lean period and feed for livestock. Its leaves, petioles, corms and cormels, are eaten. Its c/op does not require much care or attention. The farmers generally grow locally-available genotypes. They do not grow improved genotypes/varieties. Moreover, they do not follow improved technologies. Though, soil and climatic conditions are highly favourable for its cultivation, due to lack of improved production technology, quality planting material, poor storage facilities, weak marketing network and lack of post-harvest management, its commercialization has not taken momentum.
