Insecticidal Activity of Lagenandra toxicaria Dalz. against Tribolium castaneum (Herbst)

Lagenandra toxicaria Dalz. (Araceae) is endemic to peninsular India. Rhizome is used in renal and cardiac ailments. Plant is used in the preparation of ointments for skin itch. Rhizomes are considered carminative, tonic, diuretic and used in bilious complaints. Juice of the fresh plant is applied to wounds for quick healing (Chopra et al., 1994; Sivarajan and Balachandran, 1994). The rhizome oil of L. toxicaria has antibacterial activity (Annie and John De, 2007). Traditionally the plant is said to have insecticidal properties (Kirtikar and Basu, 1918). In the present study, various extracts obtained from the rhizome of L toxicaria were subjected to insecticidal activity on the storage pest, Tribolium castaneum Herbst.
