Analysis of Role Performed by Farm Women in Dairy Farming

Women play an important role in animal husbandry and allied fields. However, it is most unfortunate that their contribution in livestock rearing has not been highlighted and they have not been given the due place they deserve. Therefore, efforts weremade to analyze the role performed by women in dairy farming in Bundi district of Rajasthan. A total of 200 farm women involved in dairy farming were selected as respondents through proportionate random sampling. The respondents were interviewed throughinterview method, using well structured pre tested interview schedule. Role performed by women in four aspects of dairy farming practices were studied. The findings showed that, women's participation was 100 percent in feeding of young calves, care of new born calf and cleaning of animal shed. Further, they were actively involved in feed preparation, weaning, feeding young calves, care of sick animal, proper disposal of carcass, and disposal of infected litter material. In marketing aspect involvement of farm women was lower. Results also indicated that knowledge level of the respondents was poor in marketing aspects and in feeding and nutrition practices knowledge level was excellent. Thus, it is suggested that extension services to farm women need tobe improved so that they can access the relevant information on the good management practices of dairy farming.
