Association of Udder and Teat Dimensions with Production Traits in Vrindavani Cattle

An investigation was undertaken to study the udder and teat dimensions, their relationship with milk production traits and to derive prediction equations for milk production traits using udder measurements in Vrindavani cattle. A total of 237 Vrindavani cows maintained at Cattle & Buffalo farm, TVRI, Izatnagar, Bareilly were considered to study various udder and teat measurements and milk production traits. The least squares means for udder length, udder width, udder depth, udder circumference, teatlength, teat diameter, distance between left lateral teats and distance between right lateral teats for first parity cows were 49.22+-0.80, 55.25+-0.87, 19.41+-0.44, 90.89+-1.26, 4.97+-0.13, 2.10+-0.05, 7.52+-0.19 and 7.58+-0.19 cm, respectively. All udder and teat measurements had almost increasing trend up to 5th parity. The overall least squares means for total milk yield, 305 days milk yield, average lactation yield and peak yield were 3492.35+-69.72, 3368.32 +-58.39, 10.66 +-0.17 and 17.51 +-0.26 kg whereas lactation and dry period was 331.64 +-3.41 and 69.38 +-6.49 days, respectively. A positive and significant correlation (P<0.05) was found between total milk yield and 305 days milk yield with udder length, udder width, udder depth, udder circumference, distance between left lateral teats and distance between right lateral teats. The regression coefficient of udder width was significant and it was 97.22 (P<0.01), 59.90 (P<0.05) and 0.23 (P<0.01) for total milk yield, 305 days milk yield and peak yield while accuracy of prediction equations were 50.8, 51.4 and 54.7 %, respectively.
