Melittopalynological work for apicultural development in Karnataka with particultular reference to the contributions by the Palynology Laboratory, Department of Botany, Bangalore University

摘要

Melittopalynology finds significant applications in the beekeeping industry. Although Karnataka is considered to be one of the top honey producing states of the country, not much work on the botanical and pa-lynological aspects has been carried out, in order to understand the importance of various flowering plant species in the state. Nectar and pollen, the exclusive sources of nutrition to the honey bees, constitute the raw materials to the beekeeping industry. A thorough knowledge is therefore necessary about the nectar and pollen yielding plants of a place and the climatic factors that govern the production of these two substances. Bee botany and melittopalynology are concerned with these aspects of beekeeping research.
