Some time back, I had the chance to have a long discussion with Dr N.P. Goyal, a well known Entomologist & Beekeeping Specialist to know about his experiences with honey bees & beekeeping. Dr Goyal worked for more than about 30 years from 1966 till his retirement in 1997, only on honey bees/ beekeeping as is evident from his long list of publications. In his opinion, working on too many species of insects and on their biological aspects makes one a generalized entomologist rather than a specialized entomologist. It is for this reason that he chose to work on honey bees/beekeeping particularly on Italian race of European honey bee, Apis mellifera Linnaeus throughout his service career. Owing to his long experience of working on honey bees, he has attained a deep insight of the science of beekeeping both in theory and in practice.
