A field experiment was undertaken during kharif and rabi seasons of 2004-05 and 2005-06 to evaluate productivity and nutrient balance sheet in maize (Zea mays L.) - mustard (Brassica campestris var. Black toria) cropping system as influenced by farm yard manure, Azolla compost and inorganic fertilizer under rianfed conditions at mid-altitude (980 m MSL) of Meghalaya. Aplication of 100% NPK (50:60:30 kg/ha)+Azolla compost at 2.5 t/ha produced highest maize grain yield (3.2 t/ha) followed by 100% NPK+FYM at 2.5 t/ha. However, the highest seed yield of succeeding mustard crop was achieved with residual effect of Azolla compost at 5 t/ha+FYM at 5 t/ha (1.23 t/ha). The highest system productivity in terms of maize equivalent yield was, however, observed with integrated application of Azolla compost (5 t/ha)+FYM (5 t/ha) followed by 100% NPK+Azolla compost (2.5 t/ha). Integrated application of 100% NPK+Azolla compost (2.5 t/ha) recorded highest nutrient removal (134.8 kg/ha) followed by 50% NPK+Azolla compost (5 t/ha). Conjunctive application of Azolla compost (5 t/ha)+FYM (5 t/ha) to maize recorded the highest post-harvest soil fertility status of the system. Application of 100% NPK+Azolla compost (2.5 t/ha) to maize produced highest net return (Rs. 21, 296/ha) and benefit:cost ratio (1.20).
