The start of the LHC will provide the unprecedented opportunity to explore physics beyond the TeV energy scale. During the start-up phase it will be crucial to make best use of early data of O(100 pb~(-1)) to calibrate and understand the detectors and to perform first physics measurements. The use of W and Z processes as "standard candles" is described in this paper, together with first analyses of inclusive cross-sections and prospects for parton density functions measurements at LHC. The experimental performances are introduced by a theoretical review of calculations for W and Z production.
