Observations of mycoplasma in modern production units

Many producers in southwest Minnesota have changed their pork production systems to update their operations and to take advantage of newer technology. The most common system they have adopted has been the early weaned pig. This early weaned productionsystem gives our smaller producers many advantages and has leveled the playing field with larger corporations relative to genetics, feeding and health. However, these systems have not been without some disease problems and challenges. Respiratory disease has continued to be a problem in the swine industry over the past several years, including the early weaned pig systems. This continuation of respiratory disease has remained, even though our producers have become more acutely aware of the negative impact respiratory disease has on their swine .operations. The prioritization of respiratory disease control to many pork producers has become more important due to increasing death loss and decreased performance in their operations. This negative impact of respiratory disease has occurred on swine farms that are doing a better job of record keeping, allowing'these producers to follow and identify poor performance.
