The role of wheat non-starch polysaccharides in animal nutrition

The major components of animal feeds are starch, protein, fat and "fibre". In classical monogastric nutrition the first three were considered to be nutrients while fibre was thought to contribute little, if anything, to the animal. Research through the late 70s and 80s in both human and animal nutrition has shown lhat some fibre components, namely the non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) were by no means inert and indeed possessed some anti-nutritive activity for production animals.
