This article discusses the effects of animal product consumption on non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer) in developed countries. Trends in non-communicable disease and animal product consumption (meat and milk) are given focus. Excessive consumption of energy dense, saturated fatty acid (SFA)-rich animal products, together with large amounts of refined carbohydrate, often in association with a sedentary lifestyle, almost certainly predisposes an individual to an increased risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
