Brake & Front End, May 1982 - we forget just how good brakes and brake fluids are these days. In the early 1980s, brake hoses and seals would allow moisture to be introduced into the brake fluid. Also, brake fluid did not have the same additive packages to prevent corrosion and control pH as we have today. Combined with cast iron calipers and wheel cylinders, leaks due to corrosion were a frequent occurrence. DOT-5 silicone brake fluid was seen as a possible replacement for DOT-3 and DOT-4 brake fluids.
