Since the first coal was shipped from the Hunter Valley more than 200 years ago, the region has grown to become one of the world's leading suppliers of thermal coal used to power both the local and international economies. Newcastle remains the largest coal export port in the world, with 78Mt shipped to overseas markets in 2004-05 including Japan, China, Taiwan, Mexico and India. Revitalised exploration, new investment in infrastructure and a number of new projects and extensions will ensure the Hunter coal industry will continue to deliver the goods.
