As a guest speaker at the 2009 SAE-A Automotive Engineering Excellence Awards, Tony Wallis captured the technically minded audience with his story of technical innovation clashing with sporting rules, We want to share his story with those who could not attend that function. Here is a summary of his presentation. To demonstrate the capability of Bishop Innovation's new rotary valve technology, it joined forces with Mercedes-Ilmor to develop the technology for use on their V10 Formula One engine. Unfortunately, this strategy was destroyed by a change to the engine regulations. Subsequently the technology has been successfully transferred to a state-of-the-art motorcycle, opening the door for a new generation of recreational engine products.
