Biosolids management update.

Findings of the 1997 Biocycle biosolids composting survey are reported. The status of each state in relation to the delegation of the US Environmental Protection Agency's 40 CFR Part 503 biosolids management regulations, promulgated in 1993, is summarised. Information is presented on management practices, facilities and biosolids generated. Beneficial use of the biosolids is the dominant practice in 25 of the 36 states providing data. The following options are considered: land application, composting, lime stabilisation, heat/drying pelletisation, landfilling, incineration and surface disposal.
