Forensic issues of involuntary admissions: The Achilles heel of psychiatry residency in general hospital psychiatry unit in India

India is country with a huge demand of psychiatrists due to the huge discrepancy in the number of psychiatric patients and the number of practicing psychiatrists. In such a situation, proper training of residents in psychiatry is of paramount importance. Currently, in India 3 types of post-graduate residency programs are in vogue. Two of them are "Diplomate of National Board" (DNB) and "Doctor of Medicine" (MD), both of which are three year courses, focusing on the training on the clinical and research aspects of the subject. The third is a two year diploma course on clinical training known as "Diploma in Psychological Medicine" (DPM). The training of psychiatrists in India occurs in two settings, mental hospitals and general hospital psychiatry units (GHPLJ) (Khandelwal et al., 2004). Mental hospitals are institutions primarily catering services to patients with psychiatric disorders with presence of only few allied departments like Neurology, Neurosurgery etc. GHPU are the psychiatry units present in the general hospitals among the other specialties.
