IT'S POSSIBLE THAT there are better places to be than in the Monterey, Calif., area in August. But if you are a car guy or gal, it's a slice of heaven (see main story, page 34). While the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance is the backbone for all of the events, the week leading up to the grand dame of concours is filled with auctions. You won't find many 1965 Ford Mustangs at these sales, but you'll see some of the best (and most expensive) examples of classics and exotics and more than a few wild cards.
