ED JACOBSEN OF THREE Lakes, Wis., calls his personal garage the Petroleum Museum, and there's no admission charge. Jacobsen retired 24 years ago after owning six gas stations in the Chicago area, but he never saved any of the "petroliana" (or "petrobilia") that decorated his stations. As stations turned into convenience stores that profit more from snacks and soft drinks than from auto repairs, Jacobsen sensed a loss of something important about auto-service history. So he started collecting the porcelain oil-company signs; models of old gas stations, cars and pumps, and oil containers from the days when they were glass and refillable.
