Marketing food production and processing sustain-ability is not a new concept to some Australian and overseas consumers. It is however, new to the grains industry, and something Australian Future Grain Leader Program graduate, Louise Flohr has investigated in the past 12 months. The idea began when Flohr, previously an agronomist, saw growers implementing sustainable practices, and wanted to ensure this message got to Australian consumers. She told the recent Grains Industry conference in Melbourne, the core of her project, SustainGrain Certified, was marketing the sustainable practice no-till farming."About 80% of Australian grain producers are now no-tilling, suggesting that these farmers are striving to maintain the most important aspect of their business - their soil," she said. The idea of marketing grain as sustainably produced via an on-farm audit gained momentum when Flohr found a group of farmers in the US marketing their grain as sustainable to restaurants, bakeries and pizzerias in the North Western states.
