Farm bioenergy income stream developing - but at snail's pace

The 2008 release of the Australian Bioenergy Roadmap by The Clean Energy Council points to new sources of farm income, as Australia moves toward a more sustainable and diverse stationary energy supply. The roadmap's target is to lift the percentage ofelectricity generated from bioenergy from 0.9% to 4% during the coming decade. To date, this 0.9% has been sourced from Landfill Gas, with bagasse a by-product of sugar refining the other major contributor, table 1. In comparison, European countries have already surpassed Australia's 2020 target, generating from 4% to 14% of their electricity requirements from renewable bioenergy, figure 1.
