WOOL harvesting is one of many industries experiencing a skilled labour shortage across Australia. Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) released a report last year estimating a shortfall of about 500 adequately trained shearers and wool handlers enteringthe industry each year. More telling perhaps are the findings of a 2002 study by the Australian Workers Union, which revealed two-thirds of all shearers surveyed were more than 36, and a third of these were more than 46. Less than 6% were less than 26 years of age.
