This is the second in a series of articles by NSW consultant David Thompson examining native vegetation conservation in NSW. In the first article (AFJ April 2001, page 35), the role of government in the process was discussed. This article covers conservation on private and public land, with an emphasis on conservation solutions, which fit within the financial and physical limits of the farm business. One motivation for delving into private conservation is the fact that adequate ecosystem conservation and representation cannot be achieved on public land alone. The issue of native vegetation conservation on private land must be addressed, but to achieve substantial ecological outcomes, governments need to think beyond a heavy-handed "command and control" regulatory approach. There is an urgent need for government-funded conservation programs on farms to become less ad hoc and short-term in nature.
