AUSTRALIA'S grain farmers have started harvesting a 5.5 billion dollar harvest. The largest winter wheat, barley, oats, and legume crop (more than 28 million tonnes) since 1983-84 will replenish many rural bank accounts and give many farmers the welcome problem of deciding how to best use their surplus cash. The biggest financial problem facing Australian farmers is debt. They now collectively owe about 18 billion dollar. Retirement of debt will be high on the agenda of many grain producers.
