THE DEVELOPMENT of self-managed work teams in Australian manufacturing and service industries is one of the most significant organisational trends of the 1990s. The structure of Australian companies is changing from simple hierarchies to more complexnetworks of small teams which are self-directed, but which operate within an agreed corporate plan. To a great extent small businesses and family farms have been excluded from this revolution, due mainly to the isolated nature of these businesses and the fact that 'team management' has been designed for large companies.
