Holistic way works for Otago farms

The New Zealand Grassland Association's 75th Anniversary Conference made a field trip to visit three outstanding properties in the exposed Otago uplands, which is similar to Victoria's northeast high country. Deric Charlton reviews the farmers' pastures and livestock management. This is an unusual landscape, undulating with a low profile, its pastures studded with outcrops of the parent schist rock that is prized for house-building and which farmers have used as fence-posts and for sheep yards -the evidence remains from yesteryear.
