Precision planting pays for sorghum

It's long been understood that uneven plant stands reduce yield and promote unevenness in corn crops, but it has been assumed by growers that grain sorghum is not affected by uneven stands. Grain sorghum's ability to tiller and flex its head size hasbeen thought to allow this versatile crop to compensate for uneven distribution and reduced populations. Growers have become less concerned about grain sorghum establishment as the advent of modern seed-dressing and precision planters has dramatically improved the establishment, and population trials in the past decade indicated a flat response to increasing in plant numbers dryland farming.
