Chemical contamination of stockfeed supplies is a real concern of feedlot operators. Introducing feed quality assurance (QA) systems such as the recently launched Graincare can reduce the risk of carcase condemnation due to chemical residues. Ken Pearce, owner of Glen Elg feed-lot, east of Wandoan in southern Queensland, knows that QA is an important tool for producing high-quality beef. One of his concerns is the quality of feed he buys for the cattle. "I would like to know that the feed wasn't contaminated in any way," he says. "It could be very expensive if there was a residue problem." Cattle carcases found to have unacceptable levels of chemical residues are condemned, usually without payment to the owner. A condemned pen or feedlot due to high pesticide levels could ruin a feedlot operation.
