Few vineyard sales are being reported around Australia, but there has been an increase in new establishments. DEMAND for land suited to viticulture remains strong. In many regions, grazing land is unsuitable because water is unavailable or limited byregulations. Prominent South Australian viticultural consultant Dianne Davidson says it costs about 25,000 dollar a hectare to build a vineyard, but on steep and rocky country this can rise to 30,000 dollar-535,000. In the several years to cropping, another 10,000 dollar/ha may be needed.
