A DOS-based computer program called Soil Data has been developed in Victoria to determine the most economical combination of nutrients to be applied to a paddock to get optimum results for a given crop or pasture. Similar in its determination and recommendations to other types of programs for weed and pasture control, Soil Data is, in effect, a home-based consultant. Says Brian Collins of D4 Data: "Farming has always involved the application of nutrients to the soil to ensure healthy growth. In addition, the soil environment must be balanced to allow the nutrients to be easily transferred from the soil to the plants."
