THE INTERNATIONAL Wool Secretariat and the CSIRO Division of Wool Technology in Geelong have conducted many investigations into the problems of woolpack contamination in wool. One cost-free outcome is the moving of the identification stencil to a sideof the bale that does not contain a base seam. For mainly historic reasons, most growers have placed their stencilled farm brand and bale information on either of the two "short" sides of the bale as well as on the bale head. However, in the case of woven polyethylene (HOPE) packs, it has been found that it is preferable to place these stencil markings on a "long" side of the bale. This simple change reduces risks of pack contamination in the wool when core sampling is done and in dumping the bales for export.
