AVERAGE TO ABOVE AVERAGE RAINFALL FORECAST: Early start to wet season in north

RAINFALL for the next three months is expected to be average or wetter than average over much of Australia (see outlook map). An early start to the northern wet season resulted in October rain being among the wettest 20% on record across muc'h of thenorthern half of Australia. The value of the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) for October was +4.2, a slight decrease on the value for September. Districts with a significant chance of being wetter than average include western parts of Victoria, centraland southern tablelands and slopes of NSW, northern Tasmania, and northern parts of Queensland. Other states have a high chance of average rainfall, with some isolated districts falling in the wetter than normal category.
