THE PROSPECT of an above-average winter crop in many areas of Australia has encouraged farmers to upgrade on-farm grain handling and storage equipment in preparation for harvest. Machinery manufacturers report increased demand for grain bins, augers,elevators and silos as farmers invest some of last season's wheat profits in new handling equipment. Many are replacing rudimentary, older-style, on-farm facilities with modern sealed silos, while those facing a potential oversupply of grain are thinking seriously about the low-cost, but risky, option of in-ground bunker storage.
