WHEN wool crashed in 1990, many specialist woolgrow-ers grumbled that things would have been all right were it not for the mixed farmers down on the black soil plains who traded their headers in on a mob of second-rate Merinos and a couple of dogs. These profiteers added the cull sheep to an already fast growing national flock, turning off dirty, lousy, burr-ridden wool by the truckload and blowing out production to unsustainable levels. Their greed, the story goes, pushed the wool industry to its inevitable disaster.
