In 2015 around 120 vessels were lost to all causes globally. Of that figure, about a fifth were due to capsize. Not capsize following fire or collision or grounding, but good old fashioned lack of stability caused by overloading, ill-considered additional top-hamper and so forth. Since many of these vessels were passenger ships, those capsizes were accompanied by a tragically high loss of life. The worst passenger vessel capsizes and drownings were in South East Asia, most commonly with grossly overloaded vessels, a circumstance that is incomprehensible to many operators in developed markets.
