Biological control and pest management: using exotics to beat exotic pests

After 16 years as an oyster fisherman, Gray Jamieson decided to further his aquaculture experience by farming marron in New Zealand during the 1980s. Now he has embarked on a new project using Grass and Silver carp as biological controllers and is developing a patented pest management system which he hopes will take off in Australia. When we think of the word 'carp' what words spring to mind? Perhaps 'feral' or 'evasive' are some of words that can be utilised in polite company. But what if I told you that there was a farmer in New Zealand who is not only farming these fish but that local councils and other government departments are hiring the fish off him and releasing them into lakes and drains throughout New Zealand!
