Industry drives growth in Ghana

Aspike in real GDP in Ghana has been attributed to the industrial sector, which has recorded its grown by 16% year-on-year according to the Ghana Statistical Service. The industrial sector was the largest driver of this, recording an impressive 41.4% spike. This was followed by the services sector at 15.9% and agriculture at 1.2%.Some of the most notable performers within the industrial sector included crude oil, up 143%, followed by construction, up 24.1%, and manufacturing, up 16.1%.Ghana is Africa's second-largest gold producer, with the yellow metal and bauxite production leading the charge of the mining and quarrying subsector to grow by almost half. Assistance from other sub-sectors including manufacturing and construction helped propel the industrial sector, with production rising by 22%, relative to the first quarter of 2011.
